The United States’ top commander in the Indo-Pacific region spoke with his Chinese counterpart Monday night, according to three U.S. officials familiar with the planning, as the two superpowers try to rebuild military ties in an effort to avoid conflict.
Adm. Samuel Paparo, commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, spoke with Gen. Wu Yanan, the commander of China’s Southern Theater, which is responsible for Beijing’s vast claims over the South China Sea. The call was the first time in years that the two regional military commanders have engaged in a formal conversation.
And just like every other time, it’s China promising to work with the US while crossing their fingers behind their back and the US coming out of it for the n-th time thinking “they’re finally gonna listen to us”.
Nothing ever changes if open dialogue is your main choice of weapon.
Yeah, and China’s behavior is very alien compared to the Soviet Union.
Soviet-American relations were created across multiple levels specifically to make sure each side understood the other to help prevent misunderstandings that could lead to war. Some of those communication channels are still functioning today.
In contrast, China chooses obscurity.

“Hassoe! We have orders to be dicks to Philippine resupply ships”.
‘No worries. We’ll just rebuke you in a letter for the 50th time.’
“Thank you for indirectly supporting our anti-social behaviour Hassoe!”
‘NP. Wait, wut?’
